In addition to capacity, safety is the key criterion for the market success of energy storage solutions in the future field of e‑drives. With eVent rupture discs, Bormann & Neupert by BS&B now offers pressure relief in the smallest diameters from three millimeters and with low response pressures from 0.1 bar especially for use in lithium-ion batteries and battery packs as well as fuel cells. The OEM components ensure directional and thus safe pressure relief at critical overpressures. Passenger cars, commercial vehicles or mobile machinery as well as their users thus remain protected against hazards from uncontrolled leaking chemicals or flames.
From November 30 to December 2, 2021, the experts for pressure relief and industrial safety technology will present the rupture discs at Europe’s leading trade fair for battery technology: In Hall 4 at Stand 495at Messe Stuttgart, manufacturers of batteries and e‑drives, automotive suppliers and manufacturers as well as producers of mobile machinery will find detailed information on the rupture discs. In addition, trade fair visitors will gain insight into the entire portfolio of industrial pressure relief systems for series production as well as special plant engineering.
The cause of excessive internal pressure in battery cells is usually overheating due to overload, short circuit or overcharging. As a predetermined breaking point, eVent rupture discs from Bormann & Neupert by BS&B yield with high precision at the predefined response pressure. In doing so, the rupture discs immediately open the largest possible, streamlined outlet cross-section; this offers a considerable safety advantage, especially in the event of a rapid pressure increase. The housing of the battery cell, which is hermetically sealed during regular operation, remains intact. The company designs and manufactures the rupture discs in a customer-specific design for every installation situation. They are supplied “ready to fit” as integrated, ready-to-install components. The compact size of the low-pressure and medium-pressure rupture discs allows easy positioning according to safety-optimized standards.
All variants of the rupture discs have long proven their triggering accuracy and permanent technical freedom from leakage in the chemical industry. As components for battery and fuel cell technology, they guarantee permanent freedom from maintenance and vibration resistance over the entire operating time. Unintentional response due to material fatigue is virtually eliminated. This makes them superior to other solutions for small installation spaces; they are also lighter and release the maximum flow cross-section more quickly. The rupture discs can easily withstand all pressure fluctuations caused by load and temperature changes permanently up to 90 percent of their response pressure. To protect the housings, manufacturers can of course combine the reliefs with balancing diaphragms.
For the first time, the Group is now also offering a newly developed low-pressure rupture disc capable of venting. It combines pressure equalization and pressure relief. In this way, the requirements of an air-permeable and a burstable component can be met with just one component.
In addition to the OEM sector for the automotive industry, the rupture discs are mainly offered for use in aviation and in high-safety environments such as safety systems for protection against fire or in cooling systems. Numerous variants in design, dimension and material always allow for an application-specific design. Certifications in accordance with ISO 9001, AS9100 and IATF 16949 underline the demands the company makes on its own technology, high-grade production and quality. And with which it sets standards in pressure relief for the battery industry.
