The company for multitechnical services in the fields of energy and communications SPIE was commissioned by the Charité — Universitätsmedizin Berlin hospital to refurbish and modernize electrical installations of four care areas at the Benjamin Franklin campus during ongoing hospital operations. The multi-technology service provider is thus ensuring greater comfort, safety and energy efficiency in the nursing wards. The project started in summer 2021 and is expected to be completed in mid-2022.
Refurbishment during ongoing operation
A team from SPIE Germany & Central Europe from the CityNetworks & Grids business unit is modernizing the general and safety lighting system as well as the fire protection system of the care areas with a total of around 180 beds. The SPIE experts led by project manager Rudolf Kollmer are supplying and installing a high-voltage system, the low-voltage main distribution board and 16 subdistribution boards as well as around 70 kilometers of cables and lines, including cable support systems. In addition, there are around 300 meters of parapet trunking, installation equipment such as switches, sockets and junction boxes and around 1,300 energy-saving LED luminaires as well as presence detectors that provide automated lighting as long as it is needed, plus cable bulkheads in fire protection walls and fire protection ducts.
“A particular challenge is not to disrupt ongoing hospital operations during the refurbishment. We can only carry out noisy work at certain times. We are therefore coordinating closely with the hospital during the course of the project. The modern technology will contribute to greater comfort and safety for patients and nursing staff and at the same time optimize the energy efficiency of the nursing wards. The modernized lighting system alone will save the hospital around 20 percent energy in the future.”

As the project progresses, SPIE will also take over maintenance of the building services equipment.
Longstanding cooperation based on trust
The service provider has been working together with Charité — Universitätsmedizin Berlin for around 20 years in a spirit of trust and partnership “We are delighted to be implementing this project. The customer appreciates our many years of experience and solution expertise in extensive projects, which we often implement during ongoing operations,” says Matthias Richter, Head of Energy Plant Construction in the CityNetworks & Grids business unit.
